Sail Tall Ships! A Directory of Sail Training and Adventure at Sea
Published in Paperback by American Sail Training Association (10 April, 2000)
Authors: American Sail Training Association, David V. V. Wood, and Jonathan Dickinson
Average review score:

The ASTA Directory
This wonderful resource on contemporary sailing vessels is published annually by ASTA, the American Sail Training Association. You can also get a copy free if you join ASTA (a worthy organization, if you are interested in sail training or traditional sailing ships). ...

The ASTA directory provides a comprehensive listing of traditional sailing ships in the US and abroad. Many of the ships listed offer sail training programs; others carry passengers for hire. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in going to sea as a sail training student, or looking for work in traditional sail.

This is an excellent book!
This is an excellent book. Everyone who is interested in sail training or tall ships should own a copy. It helped me find my way around and I am very gratefull to the author for spending the time to put together such a complete and comprehensive listing of sail training vessels. The contact information for the vessels is really what sets this book apart, because it really wouldn't be very helpfull if I read about a sail training ship that I wanted more information on, and then couldn't get in touch with them.

Scientific Illustration : A Guide to Biological, Zoological, and Medical Rendering Techniques, Design, Printing, and Display
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (06 April, 1994)
Author: Phyllis Wood
Average review score:

An invaluable aid in teaching, recommended for students.
As an instructor in Scientific Art at the University of Washington for the past 15 years, I have found the 1st and 2nd editions of SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION to be an invaluable aid in my teaching. It has been an excellent resource that I can recommend to my students, both beginning and advanced.

To the beginner it brings step-by-step examples and basic information of materials; to the advanced it brings inspiration and further goals. The richness and diversity of illustration examples, both student and professional, give it an especially unique and appealing quality.

It deserves to be on every artist's shelf, both those specifically interested in the field of science art, as well as those who want to further their basic knowledge of realist art skills.

Kathyrn D. Barker

A valuable resource to both students and teachers.
As a professor at the only small college in the U.S. to offer a degree in scientific illustration, it is extremely valuable for my students to have access to a text that exposes them to the various techniques and applications associated with scientific illustration. Phyllis Wood's Scientific Illustration provides students with both a basic overview of the field, including introductory rendering techniques, and an in-depth discussion of the many applications of the work, such as presentation graphics and exhibit design.

The well-organized contents begin with traditional approaches and media, and end with an excellent chapter on computer applications. The numerous illustrations do not merely supplement the text, but act as lessons in themselves. Many of the best illustrators in the field are represented in the illustration credits.

My students and I are very grateful this resource is available to supplement the material presented in the classroom.

Circles and cycles, blessings and renewal
If you have Nancy Wood's other volumes you already know what kind of a spell she can weave. She just keeps getting better with each collection. Silly Spider
Published in Hardcover by Random House Children's Books (A Division of Random House Group) (04 June, 1998)
Authors: David Wood and Richard Fowler
Average review score:

My son loves this book
This book has been a favorite of my son's since we have been reading to him. At first, he was fascinated by watching the spider pop through the pages on the book. Then, he loved to try to find the spider as it hides throughout the book. Now, he takes the spider through himself. This is a very interactive book and a lot of fun. We can't read it just once, it's at LEAST twice. The only drawback is it gets a little old for me! But he enjoys it so much, I don't really mind.

Delightful peek-a-boo style fun for a wide variety of ages.
My 18-month-old daughter "inherited" this book from her 7-year-old cousin, who really enjoyed it. It fast became her favorite book and she'd spend lots of time tucking the cardboard "silly spider" in and out of his hiding places. I bought a copy for a friend's daughter and she loved it, too. Try it -- you'll get a real kick out of the bright illustrations and the "peek a boo" interactive spider!

Songbird Carving
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Rosalyn Leach Daisey, Sina Patricia Kurman, and Roslyn L. Daisey
Average review score:

Rosalyn Diasey can help even a novice painter look great!
My husband, Ron, is an excellent carver and has been doing songbirds for about ten years. He brings life to his carvings by burning the feathers in with such detail nearly everyone reaches out to "pet" his birds. This past year he decided to go beyond the "natural" look and asked me to paint a robin so that the gift to our grandson would be from both of us.
I had only worked with watercolors previously and so, having had no experience with acrylic painting, I was still able to follow the instructions in this wonderful book and came out with a robin that looked very real. In fact, when painting one day, I had to answer the door and the guest flinched, thinking I was holding a real robin. Now if I can only come up with her instructions for painting a blue bird and/or a blue herron I would be grateful beyond words.

Excellent step by step guide for woodcarvers
Excellent step by step guide for both beginning and advanced woodcarvers. Provides detailed patterns and instructions for five different common songbirds.

"Sparkle" is it. Not only do you fall in love with the characters and the enchanting lives (past and present!) they lead, but you also come to love yourself more than you ever have before. This book will undoubtedly openthe eyes of the reader to themselves and to the Universe we live in.

A treasure, magically captivating and healing.
I've read A Sparkle on the Water three times because it's very rich and there is more to glean with each reading, more that I'm ready to "hear." It's easy to fall in love with the characters of this book, and never want to leave them. In the course of reading the book, you will realize that it will end and that thought will bring sadness. Once you start Sparkle, you're in a different world which is magical and soothing. Sparkle combines romance, metaphysics, healing, ets, the Universe's eternal messages, and speaks to anyone who has spiritual yearnings.
